| River Grove Ranch is a small breeding farm that has grown out of my quest for the perfect trail horse. I did not actually own a horse until I was an adult, though I had always loved them. I was very lucky with my first horses, I think, since they were pretty good on the trail for a beginner and I now know that those are very hard to find. | ![]() |

What makes a great trail horse?I have been thinking about this for many years, and temperament has got to be the most important for me, after soundness. I believe that you must breed in a calm easygoing temperament since it's very difficult to train a hot horse well enough for an average rider to trail ride safely and happily. That's what I am trying to do here at River Grove Ranch, with the help of my stallion, Top Dollar L.J. He has proven his own ability to be a quiet, willing trail horse with no compromises in any other area, and I am breeding him to mares who themselves have demonstrated a sensible attitude. Although the program is only a few years old, I am pleased with the results so far and I think prospective horse buyers will be too. Please browse around this site, meet my horses, and if you like, let me know your thoughts. Why Gaited Horses? All you have to do is ride one and experience that wonderful smooth gait for yourself to know. If you have back or joint problems, or are just getting older, these are the horses for you. Find one near you and try it out!
